Rainwater harvesting captures rainfall runoff from roofs that would normally escape to storm sewers and overland flow that can be used to extend an installation's water supply. The new community hospital at Fort Belvoir, Va., will collect and store up to 140,000 gallons of rainwater in cisterns for landscaping irrigation. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Norfolk District is managing design and construction of the $870 million hospital as part of ongoing 2005 Base Realignment and Closure programs.
