Approximately 700 acres of the longleaf pine ecosystem sustained damage when a tornado touched down April 10, 2009 in Harmony Church on Fort Benning. Mature longleaf pines -- some more than 100 years old -- were uprooted and windthrown. Several clusters of the endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpecker were affected.
