NOVO BRDO, Kosovo -- Members of the Multi-National Task Force-East Civil Liaison Team of KFOR 12 (Kosovo Forces) this week assisted local nongovernmental organizations, such as the Albanian Red Cross, distribute donated linens to underprivileged families from this region in Kosovo. The linen was donated by the Soldiers of KFOR 11 when they departed Kosovo in November to make room for the new KFOR 12 rotation of NATO peacekeepers. These Soldiers, many from the California National Guard's 40th Infantry Division, based in Los Alamitos, Calif., were the most recent of many rotations to donate blankets, pillows and linens before returning to the United States. Sgt. 1st Class Claire Lum Lee, Honolulu, a member of the Civil Affairs Liaison Team of the 322nd Civil Affairs Brigade, helped coordinate the effort to get the donated items to the local groups that organized an distributed them. "This type of event is important for giving people confidence that the non-government organizations are capable of this distribution process," Lum Lee said. "It shows the organizations and their government can take care of them." Lum Lee said the Albanian Red Cross packaged the linens based on the needs of the families. She said MNTF-E Civil Affairs simply ensures that donations are getting to the people most in need. Local groups really drive the effort, according to Sgt. Heather Barta of Minot, N.D., part of the MNTF-E team that helped bring the nongovernmental organizations together. "There is a pretty big need in this area," Barta said. "This worked well since we had a lot of blankets ready for donation and it's really starting to get cold." Barta said assistance was provided by more than one group but that the Red Cross led the event. -- Multi-National Task Force - East is a U.S. led task force commanded by Brig. Gen. Al Dohrmann.
