Gene C. McKinney, the 10th sergeant major of the Army, was sworn in on July 1, 1995, and served until October of 1997. He was born in Monticello, Fla., on Nov. 3, 1950.

McKinney's awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star Medal (with Oak Leaf Cluster), Meritorious Service Medal (with Three Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, NCO Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge and the Parachutist Badge.
