CRANE, Ind. -- Crane Army Ammunition Activity assisted Naval Air Weapon Systems Command with the installation of software upgrades on more than 6,500 EC86 smart bomb guidance and control sections this year.

The upgrade, which took place from Jan. 7 to Feb. 21, will keep the munitions stored at CAAA up-to-date on its guidance system software. A crew of Sailors and civilians worked with CAAA Depot Operations personnel to have the bombs brought to a central location on base where they could perform the upgrade.

CAAA stores ammunition for all the branches of the Dept. of Defense and works with each service to ensure they remain ready and reliable for future use.

CAAA was established in Oct. 1977 and is a subordinate of the Joint Munitions Command. The Army activity maintains ordnance professionals and infrastructure to receive, store, ship, produce, renovate and demilitarize conventional ammunition, missiles and related components.
