CONTINGENCY OPERATING SITE MAREZ, Iraq - Soldiers assigned to Battery B, 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery, 4th Advise and Assist Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, provided security and assistance for the Ninewa Provincial Reconstruction Team during a mission to inspect medical clinics in the city of Ashuar, near Mosul, Jan. 9.
The U.S. soldiers ensured the safety of all personnel during the mission to assess recent renovations to the medical facilities of the al-Inan and al-Gharbi neighborhoods in Mosul.
"We provided support to the PRT during this mission by transporting them to these clinics, and making sure they have a secure work environment to assess the progress Iraqis have made," said Sgt. 1st Class Rocky Galmore.
The combined efforts of U.S. forces, the PRT and local Iraqi leaders ensured the renovation project will be completed and the medical clinics will be ready to treat Iraqi citizens.
"These clinics will do a lot of good for the community by allowing the people of Iraq to have more resources and further their independence," said Galmore, a native of Merryitt Island, Fla.
During the assessment, soldiers met with community residents and provided toys and candy to local children.
"We always go out and assist the PRT as they talk with the Iraqis about improving the area, but it's always special to personally be able to give something back to the children that we see on the streets," said Spc. Dustin Rancher, a native of Arlington, Texas.
