The Fort Sill Twin Oaks Bowling Center hosted a regional Oklahoma high school bowling tournament for the first time Feb. 16.

Almost 100 girls and boys participated in the tournament which was won by the MacArthur Boy's and Eisenhower Girl's teams. They will go on to bowl at the Oklahoma State high school bowling tournament Feb. 23 in Tulsa. The runner-ups were the MacArthur Girl's and the Eisenhower Boy's teams.

The teams were from local bowling center conferences, said Kelly Wright, TOBC manager. Twin Oaks sponsored Lawton, MacArthur and Eisenhower high schools. The Duncan bowling center sponsored Duncan, Marlow and Comanche high schools; while Anardarko bowling center sponsored Anardarko and Binger-Oney high schools.

Wright said she wanted the young bowlers to have a great time at the tournament.

"I want them to experience teamwork, bowl with high energy and have a great sense of accomplishment," she said.

Teams consisted of separate boy's and girl's teams with about eight players on a team. The tournament used the baker format where five players bowled 10 frames for one combined team score, said Gabby Galloway, Oklahoma High School Bowling Board representative and tournament coordinator.

The first player bowled frames 1 and 6. The second bowler bowled frames 2 and 7 and so on, with the fifth bowler bowling frames 5 and 10. Substitutions were allowed.

Galloway said one strategy is to have the best bowler fifth, because on the 10th frame they have a chance to bowl three strikes.

"Your next best bowler would bowl fourth, because if he or she gets a strike, and your best bowler gets a strike that's a double," he said. "The third best bowler would bowl in the first frame because they would bowl behind the fifth bowler. That way you string strikes together and your score gets higher."

During the regional tournament, teams first bowled alone with the team final scores determining where they would be seeded in a bracket. Then in bracket play, with No. 1 vs. No. 8, etc., the teams were bowling head-to-head, with the winner advancing to the next bracket.

Galloway said Twin Oaks is one of the best local bowling alleys.

"It is one of the best-kept, best-run facilities with new equipment, and it is the largest one in Lawton."
