Philippi Park Temporary Closure Discussion

By Michelle HelmsMarch 13, 2013

PORTLAND, ORE. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers hosted a web-based public meeting Jan. 31 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss the proposed temporary closure of Philippi Park, located near John Day Dam.

We encourage members of the public to provide possible options that will help us continue to operate Philippi Park. After reviewing the options, we will announce whether Philippi Park will open for the 2013 recreation season during the week of March 4, 2013.

We have created a video that discusses the situation and have included questions and answers you may find helpful. If you have questions or suggestions please email us at PhilippiPark@usace.army.mil.

Increased costs and budget cuts have made the status of the park uncertain and the Corps is asking members of the public for ideas that could keep the park open. Albert Philippi Park is located on the John Day River about 3 miles southeast of John Day Lock and Dam.

This is the first online public meeting the Portland District has held. The meeting began with an introduction, followed by a short video describing the park and the proposed temporary closure. Afterward members of the John Day and Portland District Natural Resources staff answered questions from participants.
