FORT HUACHUCA, Ariz. -- The commanding general of the Communications-Electronics Command paid a visit to Fort Huachuca January 9 through 11 to get a close look at what the U.S. Army Information Systems Engineering Command, a subordinate command of CECOM, does in support of the Warfighter and to meet with the command's workforce.
Maj. Gen. Robert Ferrell, accompanied by Command Sgt. Maj. Kennis J. Dent, the CECOM command sergeant major, toured ISEC's facilities and held a town hall meeting with ISEC employees to address his campaign plan and the future of the command.
Ferrell's main points of emphasis he addressed to the crowd during the town hall meeting Jan. 9, 2012, followed two main themes; caring and communications. He told the audience that better communication is the key to a caring work environment and since 75 percent of everyone's days revolve around work, they need to maintain a positive attitude and look out for the well being of others.
"I think the IT world has really moved us away from the face-to-face communications," Ferrell said. "My new challenge to all of our leaders is to get through a work week and count the number of times we told someone 'thank you' or 'you did a great job.' That opens the line of communication."
During the course of his discussion, Ferrell also laid out his top priorities for CECOM and the ISEC work force. His main focuses are on the draw-down in Afghanistan, operating effectively and efficiently to support the Warfighter, and lifecycle management of Department of Defense networks.
ISEC's mission involves those three elements the commanding general addressed, with much emphasis on the management of networks.
"We are the enabler to the network, whether we do the engineer work, the design work or the brick and mortar work," Ferrell said.
He also made mention that everything the command does is in support of the Warfigter. According to Ferrell, the draw-down and transition from over a decade of war will take priority across the command and assisting the Warfighters make that transition is the key.
"Getting on the ground and being an impact player on training our Soldiers, getting them to sustain their equipment and being the eyes and ears from a readiness side of the house for our Warfighter," said Ferrell. "We're going to focus on helping our teammates transition from Afghanistan."
When mentioning the customers and partners of CECOM and its down-trace units, Ferrell said, "My dream for the day is whenever they think of meeting a life-cycle person, that they think of CECOM and all of the elements of CECOM."
After he addressed the crowd, Ferrell toured ISEC's facilities to meet its workforce. He said that was the best part of his job; getting out and meeting with the workforce and congratulating them for the hard work they do day in and day out.
"I'm going to get a chance over the next couple of days to come around to your areas. And I'm big on photos, Ferrell Said. "I like taking pictures mainly because I believe taking pictures is a snapshot in a time in history for us."
