CAMP KIM, Republic of Korea (Dec. 20, 2012) -- To support those who serve far away from home during the holiday season, Seoul American Middle School's National Junior Honor Society students donated $2,000 worth of phone cards to the local USO here, Dec. 18.
The SAMS NJHS engages in many events that contribute to the local community. This year, it decided to turn its attention to Soldiers, who are stationed away from home during the holiday season. The donation was planned by the students' own initiative without the help of teachers.
"We (NJHS) meet every twice-a-week and discuss how we can help our school and what we can do for our community," said Stephanie Choe, president of National Junior Honor Society at Seoul American Middle School. "We thought that this would be a good fundraising idea and a good way to raise money to help our troops in Afghanistan guarding us.
"We successfully raised over $2,000," she continued. "Soldiers mean a lot to us. On behalf of NJHS, we give big thanks to them."
Choe handed over the phone cards equivalent to the money they raised to USO. Sharing handshakes and thoughts with Choe, Tony Davis, country director for USO Korea, expressed his gratitude to the students and explained USO's plans for distributing the phone cards.
"They chose to use the USO as the vehicle by which they get their cards to Afghanistan," Davis said. "Our mission statement is to lift the spirits of service members and their families. Being a conduit, USO is the way that America says thank you to service members. We have already contacted folks in Afghanistan. USO has 116 centers worldwide, so we will send phones cards directly to the USO in Afghanistan."
A portion of the cards will be sent to Camp Stanley, Republic of Korea, where the phone cards will be utilized by Soldiers stationed near the Korean demilitarized zone.
