Every year since 1992, thousands of volunteers have descended on Arlington National Cemetery on the second Saturday in December to honor veterans by joining the Wreaths Across America effort to place wreaths on some of the gravesites. Last year about 6,000 volunteers put down approximately 24,000 wreaths.

This year's event takes place on Saturday, Dec. 15. To register, use the Wreaths Across America link provided on this page. Wreaths Across America encourages individuals to invite family, friends and neighbors.

According to the organization's web site, a shuttle bus has been arranged by Dominion Virginia Power to take volunteers from their Alexandria office (907 West Glebe Road) to Arlington National Cemetery. Please indicate the names of your party members who plan to use the shuttle when you register. Using the shuttle will save you a lot of hassle from traffic congestion and parking. The shuttle will run every 15 minutes from 8 a.m. to noon.

In addition to volunteer help to lay wreaths, help is also needed with the distribution of wreaths from the large tractor trailers that bring the wreaths from Maine. If you are interested in that aspect of the project, please sign up accordingly. Volunteers helping with this part of the event will need to arrive at Arlington National Cemetery at 6:30 a.m. and work until the wreaths have been distributed.
