Milley to relinquish command Monday

Maj. Gen. Mark A. Milley will relinquish command of Fort Drum and 10th Mountain Division (LI) to Maj. Gen. Stephen J. Townsend.

Milley was nominated Nov. 15 and is pending confirmation for promotion to the rank of lieutenant general with an assignment as commanding general, III Corps and Fort Hood, Fort Hood, Texas.

Milley has served as commanding general at Fort Drum since November 2011. During his tenure, 10th Mountain Division Soldiers have deployed to multiple training exercises and served during contingency operations in Afghanistan.

This was Milley's third time being assigned to Fort Drum. He served as commander of 2nd Bri-gade Combat Team from May 2003 through June 2005. He previously served in various capacities to include administrative officer, operations officer and executive officer for 2nd Brigade, from June 1993 through June 1996.

Townsend comes to Fort Drum from the Pentagon, where he served as director of the Pakistan / Afghanistan Coordination Cell.

He is no stranger to Fort Drum, having served as assistant chief of staff of operations for the 10th Mountain Division (LI) from June 2003 to July 2004.

Previously, Townsend served as commander of 4th Battalion, 31st Infantry Regiment, from June 2000 to June 2002.

He also served as the operations officer of 2nd Brigade, 78th Division (Training Support), at Fort Drum from July 1999 through June 2000.
