The following statement is issued on behalf of Maj. Gen. James C. McConville, commander of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

The Department of Defense officially announced that the 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) headquarters and the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), both from Fort Campbell, Ky. will deploy to Afghanistan in late winter for our next rendezvous with destiny.
This will mark the division's third deployment to Bagram, Afghanistan, where it will once again serve as the headquarters for NATO's International Security Assistance Force-Afghanistan's Regional Command - East. This is the same role that the division filled during deployments in both 2008 and 2010.
This will be the 4th Brigade's third deployment to Afghanistan. The 4th Brigade "Currahee" previously deployed to Afghanistan in 2008 and 2010, as well.
We are honored for the opportunity to again serve our nation and to continue the legacy of this great division.
The Soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division (AASLT) are highly trained, disciplined, and fit and are ready to deploy together, fight together, and win together in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. They are fully prepared to operate as a fully-integrated combined team in a joint, interagency, intergovernmental, and multinational environment.
It is advantageous that this headquarters will be returning to the same role and location that the division has previously served. Many of our staff that were on the last deployment will be on this deployment. This will allow us to capitalize on relationships that we previously had and will provide great continuity.
As you may be aware, we already have elements of many of our brigades currently serving in Afghanistan, including the 1st Brigade "Bastogne", 2nd Brigade "Strike", 3rd Brigade "Rakkasans", 101st Combat Aviation Brigade "Destiny" and the 101st Sustainment Brigade "Lifeliners". This is not unfamiliar ground for us, and we look forward to serving with our fellow Screaming Eagles already there. They are properly manned, equipped and trained and have the strong leadership and resources needed.
While it is difficult for us to once again leave loved ones for this deployment, we recognize that it is difficult on the Families that also sacrifice. It is comforting for us to know that we have the support of such great communities. Thank you all for your enduring support.
