FORT SILL, Okla.-- The 77th U.S. Army Band is marching to the beat of a different commander as of Nov. 15, but Warrant Officer Matthew David ensures the "Pride of Fort Sill" will maintain its fast paced tempo.

"I know that I have big shoes to fill, but I am ready to work," said David.

Chief Warrant Officer 2 Michael Franz led the band for the past three years through various performances at area schools to post ceremonies, to the fields of major league baseball and NFL football games.

Franz organized the band into different ensembles, using the members' talents to create a sound for each event.

"I feel that I've been truly blessed with this assignment, and I'm deeply thankful to all of you. I've been blessed with access and support to great leaders here at Fort Sill," said Franz. "There are a lot more champions of the band out here and I apologize for not recognizing you all by name, but you are all very appreciated."

David, Franz and Maj. John Groefsma, Fires Center of Excellence Headquarters Detachment commander, lined up in front of the 77th Army Band to pass the unit guidon.

"Change of command ceremonies are special events. It's an occasion for a commander who has put so much of himself into an organization to formally pass the guidon to an incoming commander. That new commander will then have the privilege and responsibility of continuing the legacy of the unit," said Groefsma.

When David arrived at Fort Sill from his previous duty station in Hawaii, he said he didn't know what to expect. But, he said the two areas both have the same easy going pace with the friendly gestures that accompany a small town feel.

"Mr. Franz you have done a great job with this band. You have maintained a high standard of performance and professionalism which is a perfect situation to walk into," said David.

Franz and David were not the only two honored that day. Franz's wife, Andrea was also honored for her hard work during their time here with the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal and the Alice Grierson Award for Excellence.

"And of course my greatest blessing is my family. Andrea you are my real-life Molly Pitcher. You always know how to keep me in the fight and always stand by my side and I think that was awesome that you were recognized today for everything that you did," said Franz. "Matt you should have a great time in command with all the support that you see around you. You should have no problems leading this band and this unit to new and exciting adventures and accomplishments."
