FORT SILL, Okla.-- The holidays can be a stressful time for families, both military and civilian. Often they have have to balance the cost of a holiday meal and gifts. Families at Fort Sill received a little help this holiday season in the form of food vouchers.

The $40 vouchers are redeemable at the commissary for Thanksgiving meals for Soldiers with families.

Staff Sgt. Katherine Bruhn, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade, said the vouchers came from post support networks.

"The vouchers come from Army Community Services (ACS). It's something ACS does for the Soldiers. We identify the Soldiers in the most need and pass the information to ACS," Bruhn said.

One of the vouchers recipients, Cpl. Ronecia Simmons, HHB, 31st ADA, said the voucher's benefits reach much further than just her.

"Every year I invite single Soldiers to my house to celebrate the holiday. So this voucher is not only providing for my family, but also the Soldiers who are joining me."

Simmons added the voucher goes a long way in helping her and her family with the cost of their Thanksgiving meal, and also allows her to extend generosity to Soldiers she invites over for Thanksgiving.

"Every little bit counts, and we all know by no means is Thanksgiving dinner cheap. I don't like to ask the Soldiers to bring anything except a smile and an appetite, so this voucher will help with the expenses," Simmons added.

Simmons also said the vouchers help relieve the financial worries of the holidays, and are a welcome relief.

"It's good to accept a blessing when it's given to you. The holidays can cause a strain on your pockets, so it's nice to relieve a little strain. It's always a good feeling to not have to worry about finances during the holidays."
