CHICAGO (Army News Service, Dec. 8, 2006) - Even though it's been almost a month since he clinched his third straight NHRA POWERade Top Fuel world championship, U.S. Army driver, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher, is still getting his share of the post-season spotlight.
The Chicago native, who recently won the Fourth Quarter Driver of the Year
Award was selected by a panel of media experts named to the 2006 American Auto Racing Writers & Broadcasters Association's All-America Team for the fourth time in his career.
Additionally, Schumacher remains a candidate for the Economaki Champion of
Champions Award, which he captured last year, as well as the prestigious Jerry Titus Award, which is AARWBA's Driver of the Year. The latter will be announced at the organization's annual awards banquet, January 13 in Indianapolis.
Schumacher is now in contention for the SPEED Performer of the Year
award, which will be revealed during a one-hour SPEED Performance Awards television special in February. Other candidates include Fernando Alonzo (Formula 1), Jimmie Johnson (NASCAR), Nicky Hayden (MotoGP), Sebastian Bourdais (Champ Car) and Sam Hornish Jr. (IRL).
"It's nice to see that the U.S. Army team's hard work is being recognized," said
Schumacher. "As I've said before, any award that I end up winning is for my guys. Without their grit and determination, we wouldn't have staged the greatest comeback in NHRA history."
Using a record-setting pass in the final round at the season finale in Pomona,
Calif., Schumacher fully erased what was once a 336-point deficit to claim his fourth career world title.
"I think a lot of people are still talking about that race," he added. "It was
definitely one for the history books."
