REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. - U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command leadership kicked off more than a week's worth of activities honoring veterans and Veterans Day with a ceremony, coffee call and parade in Athens, Ala., Nov. 3.

Lt. Gen. Richard Formica, SMDC commanding general, Command Sgt. Maj. Larry Turner, SMDC command sergeant major, and Ronald Chronister, SMDC deputy to the commander, joined Athens residents at the Alabama Veterans Museum for the coffee call, which included a special dedication video to veterans.

Following the coffee call, Formica and his wife, Diane, Turner, and Chronister and his wife, Susan, joined the 203rd Military Police Battalion for a Change of Command in the museum's event center. Following that, Formica and Turner were special guests in the Athens fifth annual Veterans Day parade.

The events were just the first of many events in the Huntsville area to pay tribute to veterans over the next week or so. Some additional events scheduled are:

Nov. 5, 7:30-9 a.m. - Veterans Prayer Breakfast, Hogan YMCA, 130 Park Square Lane off of Hughes Road in Madison. Tickets for the breakfast are available at ymcahuntsville.org.

Nov. 7, 8:30 a.m. - Heroes Week, Huntsville

Nov. 7, 3 p.m. - Welcome Home Wounded Warriors, Westin, public invited

Nov. 7, 5 p.m. - Welcome Home Wounded Warriors, Westin, public invited

Nov. 8, 4 a.m. - Revisit Korea project team departing Huntsville International Airport with Korean War veterans. Veterans are scheduled to depart at 5:35 a.m., and return at 5:09 p.m., Nov. 14.

Nov. 9, 5:30 p.m. - Huntsville/Madison County Veterans Day Dinner, Von Braun Center North Hall. Dinner tickets are available. For information call Linda Crutcher at 722-4260 or e-mail linda.crutcher@lmco.com.

Nov. 10, 10 a.m. - Huntsville/Madison County Veterans Memorial charter ceremony, Veterans Memorial Park downtown. The memorial's time capsule will be dedicated.

Nov. 10, 6 p.m. - Marine Corps Birthday Ball, Westin. Tickets are $55. For information call 213-9683, ext. 108.

Nov. 11, 5 p.m. - Veterans Day concert, First Baptist Church on Governors Drive. Everyone is invited.

Nov. 12, 9-10 a.m. - Veterans Day Breakfast, by invitation-only, Huntsville Depot Round House.

Nov. 12, 11 a.m. - Veterans Day parade, downtown Huntsville. Pre-parade activities will take place 10-11 a.m. at Veteran's Memorial Park.

Nov. 17, 10 a.m. - Huntsville/Madison County Veterans Memorial's Phase 2 dedication, Veterans Memorial Park.
