10/23/2012 VILLAGGIO, Italy- Vicenza Middle School students took part in a one-mile fun run Oct. 22 that kicked off National Red Ribbon week. The program which is the oldest and largest drug prevention program, according to the national Family Partnership, is a way for individuals to show their personal commitment to living drug-free. VMS principal, Dr. Julio Gonzalez said the school decided to kick off the week with a fun run because it was a great way to get kids involved in living a healthier lifestyle overall.
Over 250 students participated in the run with 7th grader Edwin Maldinado finishing first for the males and 7th grader Ashley Frank finishing closely behind him as the first female finisher. Amongst the faculty, the science department represented with 8th grade science teacher Chance Wilson finishing first for male teachers and 7th grade science teacher Kim Stevenson finishing first for the female teachers.
Throughout Red Ribbon week Vicenza Middle School and Elementary School had many activities that support the 2012 theme "The best me is drug free" to include essay contest, sports days and afterschool jam session. Adults had the opportunity to test their skills during a lunchtime trivia contest Oct. 24.
Students (kindergarten through 12th grade) still have a chance to win an ipad2 and $1,000 for their school by taking part in the Red Ribbon photo contest sponsored by NFP. To learn how to enter, visit www.nfg.org.
