Redstone Arsenal, Ala. -- Sept. 28, 2012 -- Gen. Dennis L. Via, Army Materiel Command's Commanding General paid his initial visit to the Aviation and Missile Life Cycle Management Command here today.

Via was hosted by Maj. Gen. Lynn Collyar, AMCOM Commanding General, receiving executive briefings on the command's Supply Chain Management Initiative, Aviation Center Logistics Command, command initiatives and support to fellow organizations on Redstone.

"We need to focus on the unique capability that AMCOM provides to our Army," Via said. "The significance of what AMCOM does daily does not go unnoticed, and AMCOM is going to be even more important over the long term."

Via toured and received an overview of the U.S. Army Test, Measurement and Diagnostic Equipment Activity. USATA provides the Army with the unique capability to calibrate, repair, and support mission-critical weapon system components, as well as assuring that precisely calibrated measurements are traceable to National Institute of Standards and Technology, international, and intrinsic standards.

"It's vitally important that we alert students to the uniqueness of what we do here at the Arsenal and the contributions that our workforce makes to the Army and the Department of Defense," Via said. "The fact that USATA is the Army's Primary Standards Lab proves the importance of maintaining these state-of-the-art facilities."

USATA's motto: 'It won't shoot, move or communicate without calibrated test equipment.'

"This is a critical function that can benefit future employees who are now in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics curriculums," Via said. "We will work to get you the resources that you need to continue this critical and vital mission."

Via reminded the team, "what I see here is unique, although behind the scenes. You are the silent professionals who contribute to the readiness of the force everyday."

AMCOM provides supply and maintenance support directly to Army customers at locations, worldwide. For example, AMCOM's Aviation Center Logistics Command employs 3,000 workers to support the flight training aircraft fleet at the Army's Fort Rucker, Ala., Flight School.

AMCOM is a major subordinate command for AMC, and unites all of the organizations that work to design, acquire, integrate, field, and sustain Army aviation, missile, and unmanned aircraft weapon systems.

AMCOM also operates multiple sites in the United States where aviation and missile systems are reset after returning from combat.
