ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md.--The U.S. Army Communications-Electronics Command, CECOM, will receive the 2012 Employer Merit Award from the Harford County Commission on Disabilities in recognition of its efforts to promote and facilitate the employment of individuals with disabilities. CECOM will be recognized at the Commission's annual luncheon Oct. 19, 2012, 12 p.m., at the Maryland Golf & Country Club in Bel Air, Md.

As an agency that prides its self on diversity, CECOM accomplished a lot over the past year to ensure current employees with disabilities are provided all the necessary tools to display their abilities, as well as prepare the workforce, environment, and facilities that make up Communications-Electronics Command for our future employees with disabilities as we strive to become the Army's employer of choice for persons with disabilities.

As CECOM continues to improve its already robust program to hire and accommodate employees with disabilities, a number of goals were surpassed this year including increasing number of handicap parking spaces by 38 percent beyond the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements; developing a written emergency evacuation procedure for all buildings and conducting regular evacuation exercises to ensure employees requiring assistance are included in the plans; hiring 91 disabled employees; establishing a software application development and purchasing process whereby the Disability Program Manager is included to ensure Section 508 compliance is considered.
