YONGSAN GARRISON, Republic of Korea -- Volunteers at U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan were recognized and presented awards for providing valuable service to the Area II Community here, Sept. 21.
Working at many different types of assignments in various organizations throughout USAG Yongsan, volunteers have always dedicated their time and energy to keep the Community ready.
Master Sgt. Douglas Hoyle, a signal intelligence analyst for Detachment 1, 303rd Intelligence Squadron with the U.S. Air Force, supported the softball camp as a coach and received the award. He could not conceal his dazed feelings as he was not expecting an award like this.
"It feels great," Hoyle said. "It is one of those things that you don't expect it because you don't volunteer to win awards."
He started volunteering because of his daughter, and to help her out with her sports. But then he realized that it goes beyond that and how much important it is to help the Community in such way.
"Not all paid positions can fulfill everything that the post or base needs to be done," Hoyle said. "Volunteers are always needed to filling those gaps, and to make sure everything gets done."
Col. Michael E. Masley, garrison commander of USAG Yongsan, appreciated all the volunteers' hard work and emphasized that constant volunteering from Community members is always needed and welcome.
"The Yongsan community can't operate without the volunteers," Masley said. "Their work is immeasurable. What is measurable is the amount of dollars we save on the Community. Plus, what the Community looks forward to is the relationship that are built between people, who serve and who are receiving services."
