ANNISTON ARMY DEPOT, Ala. -- In Mike Mathews' 27 years at Anniston Army Depot, he has seen most of the processes and equipment used to fulfill the installation's overhaul and repair missions.

"Most employees only have a chance to see their own corner of the depot's operations. They don't get to see the big picture. I feel fortunate to have been able to," said Mathews who, on Aug. 26, was named the depot's new director of public works.

Mathews graduated Auburn University with his bachelor of science degree in 1978. Following graduation, he worked in his hometown of Gadsden, Ala., for Republic Steel Corporation.

His depot career began in 1985 as an electrical engineer.

Mathews has served in a variety of supervisory roles throughout the years, rising to the level of deputy director of public works in January 2010.

Mathews said his goal as director is to continue to do his best to support the production mission, ensuring employees have the equipment and, facilities needed to complete the mission.

As,he took the reins of DPW, the organization was in the midst,of,a structural change - its 10 divisions being reduced to seven.

"We combined the groups with complementary skill sets," said Mathews of the reorganization.

He said the change was done primarily in an effort to reduce staffing numbers without affecting the number of tradespeople in the directorate.

"I feel very fortunate. We have a great group of employees," said Mathews, citing the organization's continuing motto to "Keep the depot running."
