FORT SILL, Okla.-- Soldiers stationed throughout the world are expected to live by the seven Army Values. Soldiers from the 31st Air Defense Artillery Brigade introduced the Lawton, community to the selfless service value by donating a pickup truck full of canned goods to the Lawton Food Bank Aug. 11.

"It's important that we do things like this to get our young Soldiers out in the community and get them involved. It teaches them valuable life lessons," 1st Sgt. Robert Bedford said. "Soldiers always support food drives, but they never really know what an impact they make until they see it first-hand."

The cans were collected during food drives conducted by the 31st ADA service members. Through the kindness of themselves and others, the brigade was able to fill the shelves of the Lawton Food Bank.

"It means everything to us. We live and die by donations," said Jeri Mosiman, Lawton Food Bank executive director. "We are a nonprofit organization and receive no funding from the state of Oklahoma."

Although the food bank only serves people in Lawton and the surrounding communities, it feeds thousands of people.

"The Lawton food bank served nearly 45,691 people in 2011. Every dollar donated gives five meals." said Mosiman. "That's a great return on your investment."
