Base organization day a 'totally awesome' time
August 24, 2012
More than 200 people came out to this year's Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall organizational day Aug. 17. This year's theme was the decade of the 80s and included "rad" contests and "awesome" games.
Even though the org day had a throw-back feel to it, the event was a blast for the entire family. Thirteen-year-old Dominique Hodges joined in the festivities and won the hula-hooping contest. Although she was born in the 90s, she enjoyed the retro theme. "It was really fun," said Hodges.
"It was hot, but still really fun. The hula-hoop contest was my favorite because I won Redskins tickets." The teen also won some money in "Let's Make a Deal." She had a winning white envelop. "I've never seen the show before," said Hodges. She was unaware of the goofy costumes many people wear when they want to make a deal with Monty Hall. Family, Moral, Welfare and Recreation organized the afternoon outing. As soon as JBM-HH staff walked through the doors at Spates Community Club, they were sent "back to the future" by tunes from the B-52s.
Patrons enjoyed a barbeque lunch, and games kicked off around noon. First up was the "name that tune" game. Teams of four competed in guessing the themes to 50 TV shows, movies and sporting events. Other contests included a hula hoop competition, Rubik's cube contest, various "let's make a deal" games and a frozen shirt competition where contestants had to break apart a frozen T-shirt block and be the first person to put the shirt on.
After the games, many employees and Family members showed off their dancing skills by doing the wobble and cha-cha.
Overall, the event was a success due to the hard working staff at MWR, said Christina Darensbourg, chief of business operations of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation.
