CRANE, Ind. (July 16, 2012) -- More than 240 Soldiers arrived at Crane Army Ammunition Activity July 8, to participate in the national military exercise called "Golden Cargo," taking place this month at the installation.

Soldiers assigned to various transportation companies from across the country will test their mettle at the large Indiana base, as they pack, load and haul military ammunition. Golden Cargo is a joint exercise that links Reserve and Guard forces with real-world ammunition logistical operations and training opportunities.

Loaded onto trailers, ammunition will be hauled from Crane Army Ammunition Activity to other ammunition sites across the country. This movement of military ammunition is taking place as the military reconfigures its ammunition stock to better align munitions to meet the military's strategic planning goals.

On the practical side, Golden Cargo allows military members who specialize in logistics and explosives to receive hands-on training while providing the military a much needed service in re-positioning vital ammunition for the Joint Munitions Command and the Department of Defense. Since 1991, Golden Cargo participants have safely trucked more than 275,000 tons of conventional ammunition and traveled more than 18 million miles on public highways.

Participating military personnel arrived at Crane Army Ammunition Activity from all over the Unites States to include: Virginia, West Virginia, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Connecticut, Colorado, Texas, Georgia, Florida and California.

Crane Army Ammunition Activity was established in October 1977 and is a subordinate of the Joint Munitions Command. The Army activity maintains ordnance professionals and infrastructure to receive, store, ship, produce, renovate and demilitarize conventional ammunition, missiles and related components.
