St. LOUIS (Army News Service, April 3, 2008) - The U.S. Army Human Resources Command-St. Louis has dedicated a memorial to the 17 Army Individual Ready Reserve Soldiers who have fallen in support of the war on terrorism.
In a brief but solemn ceremony, Col. Wanda L. Good, commander of HRC-St. Louis, officially unveiled "Heroes Hallway," March 25 to memorialize the fallen IRR Soldiers.
The memorial's caption reads: "Citizen Soldiers...Warriors...Remembered." Underneath the words are framed photos and brief biographies of each of the 17 IRR Soldiers. A dog tag and small U.S. flag are placed next to each photo.
In the unveiling of the Memorial, Good said "It is appropriate that today, the day after we suffered our 4,000th battle casualty, that we remember our own 17 fallen citizen Soldiers and warriors who made the ultimate sacrifice during the current Global War on Terrorism."
The Memorial is in the headquarters building of HRC-St. Louis, which is located in the Federal Records Center in suburban St. Louis.
A Soldier typically becomes a member of the IRR after successfully completing a tour of duty as a Regular, Reserve or National Guard Soldier. Soldiers remain members of the IRR until their total military service obligation expires. IRR Soldiers are subject to being called back to active duty when needed, officials said. They added that today 6,632 IRR Soldiers are serving on active duty in the war on terror.
