ABERDEEN PROVING GROUND, Md. -- A program assistant was named employee of the year by the U.S. Army's Communications-Electronics Research, Development and Engineering Center, or CERDEC, here, June 19.

Melissa Flagg was recognized in the administrative, for administrative assistants category. She serves as a human resources program assistant in CERDEC's Space and Terrestrial Communications Directorate, or S&TCD.

In 2011, Flagg's main duty was to facilitate the Base Realignment and Closure activities as CERDEC moved from Fort Monmouth, N.J. to APG. She processed more than 100 employees who were reassigned or leaving the government and more than 150 employees who were making the move to APG.

In July 2011 Flagg assumed the additional responsibilities of the S&TCD training coordinator, with no prior knowledge of the role, after an unexpected departure of the previous incumbent. She had to complete extensive training and gain several certifications in order to successfully assume the new position.

"Ms. Flagg handled the workload in an impressive manner," according to her nomination package. "The only thing more impressive than her work ethic is her willingness to take on and learn new assignments, and excel at those efforts."
