PORT BYRON, Ill. -- Army Sustainment Command Historian, George Eaton, spoke to the Port Byron Historical Society and Boy Scout Troop 351 about the history of Rock Island Arsenal and its upcoming 150th anniversary celebration.
About 30 people attended the June 13 event at the Port Byron library. Eaton spoke about the Army's western expansion in the 19th century, the establishment of Fort Armstrong, the building of the Government Bridge, and the construction of the limestone shops, warehouses on the Arsenal. He also discussed the wide variety of equipment and weapons produced on the installation that have supported our military forces through the years.
Eaton asked the audience to save the date of July 7, to attend the Rock Island Arsenal's 150th Anniversary celebration.
"A parade, USO entertainment, the Golden Knights Army Parachute Team, factory and historical tours, and a flag retreat ceremony are just a few of the things you can see on July 7," he said. "This is your Army and your Arsenal, so join us to celebrate 150 years of service to our great nation."
