FORT STEWART, Ga. - Friends, Family Members and Soldiers welcomed 83rd Chemical Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Battalion to Fort Stewart, moving over 800 miles from Fort Polk, La., officially by uncasing the battalion colors, May 31.

The 83rd CBRN Bn. is part of the 48th Chemical Brigade based out of Fort Hood, Texas, 20th Support Command, which is compromised of five different battalions located at various Army Posts throughout the U.S.

"The unprecedented success of our move was a result of three very critical aspects: Leaders and Soldiers' professionalism, discipline and flexibility throughout the entire process," said Col. Maria Zumwalt, commander of the 48th Chem. Bde., 20th Support Cmd. "We could not have accomplished this massive set of critical tasks without the extraordinary support of the entire Marne Family."

Over the last several months, 83 CBRN Bn. has been communicating with the Fort Stewart Family to make the move a smooth transition.

"Even though we experienced great training in Fort Polk, we are both happy and excited to be here at Fort Stewart," said Pvt. 1st Class Lillian Williams, from 51st CBRN Co., 83rd CBRN Bn.

Private First Class Williams continues, "Uncasing our colors symbolized our new beginning and our new home here at Fort Stewart, and we extend our thanks to 3rd ID, for helping us and welcoming us the their home."

"Seventy years ago, almost to the day, on June 10 1942, the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion was activated just up the street at Camp Gordon, Ga. during WWII," said Lt. Col. Stephen Renshaw, commander of the 83rd CBRN Bn. "The 83rd is no stranger to Georgia, or the 3rd ID, many of the WWII campaign participation credits for this battalion read the same as that of the 3rd ID."

There is a Web site on the internet called the Dog Faced Gallery which honors Soldiers of the 3rd ID and related units. Loy J. Marshall from the 83rd Chemical Mortar Battalion is posted on that page.

"So it is with pride that we renew the relationship and join the team here at Ft. Stewart," said Lt. Col. Renshaw.

From the start, the 83rd CBRN Bn. has maintained a high operating tempo and endured numerous challenges and changes, but the battalion always remains postured to conduct its wartime mission and forever stands by their motto: "To Confront any Mission."

"Not only are we uncasing our colors today, but today also marks the start of a great relationship with our EOD brothers and sisters from the 63rd OD Bn," said Lt. Col. Renshaw.

There will be four Ordnance Disposal companies (756th, 731st, 766th, and 38th) along with three Chemical companies (HHD, 51st, and 92nd) that fall under the 83rd CBRN Bn.

The 83rd CBRN is looking forward to working with the newly assigned OD companies and could not ask for a better team to work with.
