ANAD commander encourages travel safety during holiday weekend

ANNISTON ARMY DEPOT, Ala. -- As I write this column, I am reminded of recent events that have taken place over the last four weeks… the Quality Work Environment visit, the AMC Depot Assessment visit, the grand opening of the Powertrain Transmission Facility and hosting numerous staff and congressional delegations. Team Anniston, your response has been impeccable.

As we continue to face rightsizing, we have not lost sight of our mission. Our customers depend on us and I applaud your continued efforts to producing quality products on time and below cost.

This weekend will mark the beginning of the summer holidays, but, more importantly, it is a day of remembrance for those who died in our nation's service.

Memorial Day is one of the most solemn holidays as we take time to honor the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines, who sacrificed for us. It is because of them that we enjoy our freedoms. Let us remember them.

Let us also remember to protect ourselves.

This holiday has a tradition of being one of the most dangerous in terms of accidents and injuries. Long distance trips, recreation and water activities, hot weather exposure and increased alcohol intake are contributing factors.

Earlier this week, the annual "Click It or Ticket" campaign kicked off. It is designed to encourage seat-belt usage. You may have noticed a stronger present of law enforcement officers on the highway. So, buckle up.

Seat belts do save lives. Wearing your seat belt costs nothing, but, without it, the price could be fatal.

Get plenty of rest before taking to the road. Don't drink and drive. Obey the speed limits and restrain from the use of portable electronic devices when behind the wheel.

If your plans include water, stay safe while swimming or boating. Know your limitations and follow the rules. Drink plenty of water. Dehydration affects both judgment and coordination.

It takes each of you to continue doing what we all must do -- equipping our military with the highest quality vehicles, artillery and weapons they have come to expect.

Enjoy your time off, and remember…we need you back!
