Families meet fitness for fun at festival
May 17, 2012
PRESIDIO OF MONTEREY, Calif. - For the third consecutive year great weather conditions and even-better excitement met over 350 Ord Military Community family members who enjoyed the Family Fun Fitness Festival on OMC May 5.
Minutes prior to the run course, the 186 parents and children participated in a Zumba dance warm up and opening remarks by Presidio of Monterey Garrison Commander Col. Joel J. Clark.
The event, which was sponsored supported by the Ord Community Commissary, Presidio of Monterey Garrison, Family and Morale Welfare and Recreation Directorate, Army Air Force Exchange Service, Better Opportunities for Single Service Members, and Pinnacle, kicked off with a nearly 2-mile course around the Doe Park housing area with stations featuring free products and information from the commissary and other sponsors.
As participants finished the course, they were met with cheers and medals noting their accomplishments.
Other activities at the event included a bounce house, piñatas, carnival games, POM police displays, as well as a POM Fire Department-sponsored "smoke house," POM Outdoor Recreation displays, AAFES sale items, and a commissary case-lot sale that included free hot food.
Every year the festival has become larger, with the commissaries, FMWR programs and exchanges taking advantage of May being National Physical Fitness Month to promote health and wellness awareness programs.
