Over 100 students met at the District Track to participate in Buffalos, Tigers and Eagles-Oh, My! 5K Fun Run sponsored by Mission Command Training Program and United School District 207 on May 11 at Fort Leavenworth, Ks.

The race was open to all USD 207 students, families and staff and MCTP personnel. The name incorporates the mascots of the schools on post and is slated to be an annual event.

Unlike many 5K community runs, the 5K Fun Run did not track "official" times or winners. A clock was provided so participants could see their personal run times.

"Although I've run in many road races, I have never coordinated a race before," said. Dr. Melissa Boyce, Patton Running Club instructor. "That's where the partnership with MCTP really helped us."

Maj. Chris O'Donnell and Lt. Col Dale Burbank, Operations Group Foxtrot, MCTP's multi-functional brigade headquarters training team, worked together to plan the details of the race and coordinated with military police to ensure the roads would be closed off for the race.

"Since the race took place when most people were leaving post for the day, road safety was our top priority," said Burbank.

Along with safety considerations, members of OPSGRP Foxtrot coordinated for race staff at various places along the route, a water station for thirsty runners, and a trail vehicle to make sure all that started the race had a means of finishing the course if necessary.

"Providing concept of operation and logistical support for this run is something we have the capability to do and we are proud to support our local schools," said Lt. Col. Thomas Patton, executive officer, MCTP.

"We are very impressed with the turn out considering it is our first year, said Col. Charles Sexton, commander, MCTP. "We are looking forward to helping with this race next year."
