U.S. Army Garrison - Detroit Arsenal, Mich. -- This year marks the 26th year the Department of Defense officially celebrates and honors the 1.8 million children who regularly feel and share the sacrifice that their military families make to guarantee our safety and freedom.

Military children at the Detroit Arsenal should not only be honored due to their everyday military-family sacrifices but also for going far beyond the norm and strive to also support their community. The local Middle School and Teen group has volunteered more than 2,000 hours to help make our local community a better place for everyone.

"We have an extremely vibrant group of children here at the Detroit Arsenal and our Middle School and Teens participate in numerous community service projects," said Nancy Mitchell, Child & Youth School-age Services coordinator. "The MST has also participated in many college trips to pace the military children on the track of future success. We have some tremendous kids here."

The Detroit Arsenal is working to assist our military children by expanding the programs which are most popular and beneficial to the parents. The Child Development Center which cares for the youngest of our military community (from 6 weeks to 10 years) is expanding to meet family's needs. There is also a school age services program in the CDC. DTA has decided to further support as many of the children as possible by expanding the CDC's ability to care for more of the younger children by providing 208 additional openings with an addition to the center. The expansion should be completed by early to mid 2013.
