FORT RUCKER, Ala. (Mar. 29, 2012) -- Avid bowlers can suit up and get their bowling shoes ready for some friendly competition as the Rucker Lanes bowling center's spring intramural season begins April 3, while everyone else can enjoy food and fun and more that the bowling center has to offer.

Rucker Lanes is taking active signups up until the night of the games at the front counter of the bowling center, according to Ron Cook, Fort Rucker Bowling Center manager.

The games will be held on Tuesdays from 6:30--8:30 p.m. for 10 weeks, and are open to all active duty military, reservists, retired military, Family members, and Department of Defense civilians and contract employees, said the manager. All Family members must be at least 19 years of age to compete in the intramural league, he added.

The cost to join the intramural league is a one-time $10 fee and $1.75 a week for shoe rentals, according to Cook.

"We do a full banquet at the end of each season," he said. "[The fee] basically covers the cost of the banquet. The only other cost that [people] are going to incur is the shoe rental, which, if people would like to buy their own, we also sell [at the bowling center]."

The teams must be in groups of four people, but people do not have to sign up for the league as a team if they do not have the full team already, said Cook.

"We encourage singles to come [and sign up] because we'll have couples that come in that want to bowl, and we'll pair them up with other couples or singles and match them with others," he said.

The bowling center also offers a youth league for those that aren't old enough to compete in the intramural season.

"We've grown out our bowling program a lot and worked to try and create some of the new youth programs here including the youth league here on Saturday mornings," said Cook.

Beginning April 7, the bowling center will start the 10-week long Rucker Lanes Youth Bowling League on Saturdays at 9:30 a.m., which includes three games of bowling, shoe rental, a youth bowling jersey, United States Bowling Congress membership, trophies and awards and an end of season XTREME party, according to Cook.

The cost of new registration for the youth league is $59.50 per child for ages 7--19, and $48 per child for ages 7 and under. For children with returning registration, the cost is $12.50 per child and $10 per child, respectively, he added.

The bowling center isn't just for bowling leagues and competitions, however, and offers much more for Families and people to enjoy year round, according to the manager.

"We have a lot going on and we're constantly working on improving things," he said. "We have a very good snack bar and a lot of lunch specials. We just rolled out pizza for the first time and that's become rather popular."

Rucker Lanes also hosts Extreme Bowling every Saturday night from 8 p.m. to midnight, which is open to the general public, said Cook.

"Extreme bowling is a crazy, party atmosphere," he said. "We crank the music up, turn the lights out and just try to have fun with bowling all around."

The cost for Extreme Bowling is $10 per person and covers all games played and includes shoe rental.

The bowling center also offers more fun for the general public to enjoy, with year round bowling at a good price, according to the manager.

"Mondays through Fridays it costs $1 per person, per game and their shoe rentals are always $1.75," he said. "After 5 p.m. and on weekends, it's $2.25 per person, per game."

On Mondays, the bowling center also hosts Quarter Mania, which starts at 5 p.m. and the games costs 25 cents and shoe rentals cost 50 cents, said Cook, adding that they offer $1 hotdogs during that time.

"We're just visiting from Ohio and it's our second time here [at Rucker Lanes]," said Mike Gullifer while bowling with his Family at the bowling center. "It's just good Family time."

The bowling center's hours of operation are: Mondays--Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. to midnight and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
