Leaders of 548th Combat Service Support Battalion case their colors as part of the deployment ceremony as they prepare to deploy later this month. Lt. Col Matthew R. Morris, 548th CSSB commander, and Command Sgt. Maj. Eric S. Fraley, 548th CSSB senior enlisted adviser, rolled up their battalion colors during the deployment ceremony at Fort Drum's Monti Physical Fitness Center Feb. 27.

FORT DRUM, N.Y. -- Soldiers of 548th Combat Service Support Battalion formally readied themselves for deployment to Afghanistan during a flag casing ceremony Feb. 27 at Monti Physical Fitness Center.

Five companies from 548th CSSB formed up in front of friends, Family Members and Soldiers of the Fort Drum community. Soldiers of three companies of the battalion will begin deploying this month: Headquarters Company, 110th Transportation Company and 514th Maintenance Company.

The remaining two companies within 548th CSSB -- the 543rd Quartermaster Company and the 590th Quartermaster Company -- will remain on Fort Drum ready to be deployed if needed.

"It's important that we train the way we fight, and we've done that," said Lt. Col. Matthew R. Morris, 548th CSSB commander. "I think we're prepared and ready to go."

He said plans are for the battalion to be in Afghanistan for 12 months, but the deployment could be dropped to nine months.

"As the 514th Maintenance Company prepares to depart followed closely by the 548th Battalion Headquarters and the 110th Transportation Company, I want the Families to know that we are here to support you," said Col. Christopher D. Latchford, 10th Sustainment Brigade provisional commander. "We are here to help you through the tough spots."

The ceremony finished with a casing of the battalion's colors as well as the three companies that are deploying.
