FORT STEWART, Ga. - As we move into a world more accessible through social media, whether Facebook, Twitter, or any other medium, the ability to access information and communicate instantly has become fundamentally ingrained in our society. For the 2nd "Spartan" Heavy Brigade Combat Team, Third Infantry Division, the changing landscape of social media has allowed the opportunity to provide communication and discussion for the Spartan Fitness program.

"We really wanted a way to communicate and discuss with Soldiers about fitness," said Capt. Patrick Casey, 2HBCT Physical Therapist. "So, really having a Facebook page dedicated solely to fitness has been a great option to get Soldiers and Family together and discussing about fitness."

With daily workout updates, videos and nutrition advice, the Spartan Fitness program has given Soldiers a one stop place to discover the latest information for unit physical readiness, stated Capt. Casey.

"We post daily exercises, whether it is Army Physical Readiness Training exercises or CrossFit Training, for unit leaders and noncommissioned officers and they can look them up before PT and have a clear cut exercise regimen planned out for them that morning," Capt. Casey said. "This also includes videos on how to properly conduct each exercise as well; it really allows for a great tool to get this information out."

The online Spartan Fitness program also includes nutrition and injury prevention advice as well stated Capt. Casey.

"There are a lot of questions Soldiers have about nutrition or even injury treatment, and not every Soldier is comfortable talking to a doctor about injuries; but with a social medium like the Facebook page we are able to provide answers to a lot of questions Soldiers previous did not feel comfortable asking," Capt. Casey said.

"Whether it is knowing to use ice or heat for an injury, or what kind of exercises burn more calories, we try to provide that information for Soldiers with daily updates," Capt. Casey said.

Captain Casey also stated that the Spartan Fitness site provides direct contact between Soldiers and medical care givers.

"Whether it is questions about muscle strains or even long term injuries we provide a confidential question and answer forum with Soldiers, almost like a web M.D. for the Spartan Soldiers," Capt. Casey said. "Ultimately the goal is to provide another tool for Soldiers to find answers to any fitness questions or concerns they may have, but in a fun, quick and easy format."
