MOLINE, Ill. - Brig. Gen. Thomas Harvey, deputy commanding general for operations for the U.S. Army Sustainment Command, served as the keynote speaker at a ceremony honoring 15 Korean War veterans on Jan. 26.

Heechang Woo, consulate general from Chicago presented Peace Ambassador Medals to the Korean War veterans from the Quad Cities. Mr. Woo told the veterans and their families, "I am eternally indebted to you for your sacrifice. From my heart, I thank you."

The Korean War began on June 25, 1950 and came to an end in July 1953. There were 6.8 million American men and women who served. Sometimes the war is referred to as "The Forgotten War" or "The Unknown War" because the actual cause was less clear than other wars.

Harvey shared his experiences of Korea, having served four tours there.

"I am grateful to Korean War veteran, Mr. Jerry Guinn for organizing this event," Harvey said. So, for those of you who are about to receive the Ambassador for Peace medal, please accept this award knowing that you have advanced the cause of peace and justice, even though you have experienced firsthand the horrors of war. You are the beauty and hope of freedom."
