FORT STEWART, Ga. - American Red Cross leader Sherry Brown, senior vice president, Service to the Armed Forces, visited the home of the Third Infantry Division, Nov. 30. The American Red Cross is an emergency response organization whose mission provides relief to victims of disaster and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies, according to the organization's mission statement.

Brown's visit to Fort Stewart was an opportunity to extend her appreciation for support the American Red Cross received from Marne Division and to meet Red Cross volunteers.

"Her primary mission is to meet our volunteers," said Alphonsa Oliver, Senior Station Manager for Fort Stewart's American Red Cross. "[So, she can] hear the stories, hear the work experiences and see what she can do to make our services better."

Brown was escorted by Oliver and Patrice Williams, American Red Cross Station Chairman at Fort Stewart.

Before having lunch with the volunteers, Brown met with Garrison Commander Col. Kevin Milton and Garrison Chaplain (Col.) Warren Kirby to discuss Red Cross services.

"First, I really want to thank you for the support you give to our [team] here, the Red Cross," Brown said, during the meeting with Col. Milton at the Garrison Headquarters. "You know how important it is for us to have a good office and space, where people can get the services they need; that is all so important to our guys. I really appreciate it; it means a lot to us."

The topic of discussion included re-leveling the prices on health and safety, recent and upcoming changes and full support for the military community.

Following the meeting, Brown ate lunch with Red Cross volunteers at Club Stewart.

"Her purpose here is to meet our volunteers and get a feel of the military environment that our volunteers volunteer in," Oliver said. "And to understand the relationship that [the Red Cross] have with the military, to [include] identifying ways to improve our relationship and to applaud the areas that we are excelling in."

Brown later visited Winn Army Community Hospital and the Warrior Transition Battalion, in which she met hospital Commander Col. Ronald Place and WTB Commander Lt Col. William Reitemeyer. She toured both facilities.

The conclusion of her day included dinner with Red Cross staff and volunteers.

"Someone asked me what my vision is for our services to the Armed Forces; thank you for asking that," Brown said. "What a lot people know about Red Cross Services to the Armed Forces is about our emergency communications mission, which is vitally important, but it is more than that. There are so many things we can bring, and my vision is that we continue to give [military support] and that we can continue to do it as one big Red Cross Family. Again, I just want to say thank you."
