ACS Aids Military Families

DETROIT ARSENAL, Mich. -- The staff from the Detroit Arsenal's Army Community Service want to bring attention to the fact that November is Military Family Appreciation Month.

President Barack Obama stated in his proclamation for the month that, "Just as our troops embody the courage and character that make America's military the finest in the world, their family members embody the resilience and generosity that make our communities strong. …"

Often, Servicemembers are the more obvious heroes due to their selfless commitment to the nation. Though, there is also heroism within the home, demonstrated by the Family members left behind.

"The hard part is often noticing the little and large responsibilities, which are normally shared. These are all heaped on the shoulders of the Family members left behind," said Dwan Grimsley, a military spouse, when talking about the difficulties of having one's Servicemember away from the Family home. "When coupling those added responsibilities with the consistent concern of whether that Family's Servicemember is safe or perhaps are they eating right, the experience can really open the Family's eyes."

Luckily, these Families are able to turn to ACS to help mitigate or alleviate some common issues which arrive during a deployment or a temporary duty assignment. ACS is committed to showing military Family appreciation all year long and not just during November.

Some of the services ACS provides include free employment readiness services, financial readiness programs and Financial Emergency Relief programs that are the most helpful during trying times. We have also noticed a significant rise in the number of Family members who have Autism. Those families can benefit greatly from our Exceptional Family Member Program. Of course, the EFMP also may assist spouses who speak English as a second language or someone who may need some educational learning assistance. We are always here to also support Family readiness groups in any manner that we may. This is part of our mobility and Deployment program. In short, ACS, is like a private/discreet, face-to-face "Yellow Pages." A Family member lets ACS know what they need and we will either provide the help ourselves, find the answer, or act as a conduit to the appropriate organization/service which will be of the most benefit for the situation.

To contact us and activate your private military "Yellow Pages," call our information and referral expert, Nancy Jo Doubrava-Dull, at (586) 282-0489 or contact the ACS director at (586) 282-6960. We are a free, government-provided service and we cannot wait to show you how much we appreciate our military Families.
