FORT HOOD, Texas - Special Agent Rondaline Craft, a Counterintelligence Strategic Partnership, InfraGard and Crisis Response coordinator with the FBI, gave the opening brief at the Fort Hood Security Managers Training Seminar Oct. 3 at III Corps Headquarters.

"It's an absolute privilege to come here and participate in the security training on behalf of the FBI," Craft said at the opening session of the four-day training event. "III Corps invited me to be here today to be a part of the Security Awareness Month. I gave a brief presentation on counterintelligence security awareness applying specifically to defense contractors and the intellectual proprieties they develop and maintain on behalf of the United States Department of Defense."

In support of National Security Month, Fort Hood is conducting a training seminar for security managers across the installation.

"We're doing a weeklong training course for the installation security managers with a focus on personnel, informational and industrial security," Linda Witherspoon, chief of installation security, said. "We hope to train all installation security managers on the current changes in security this quarter."

Craft spoke on remaining vigilant around town and the importance of maintaining proper security protocols in order to safeguard national defense information and technology.

"Be extremely cognizant of your surroundings when you are away from work and realize that you need to be cautious about what you share about your work when you are out and about," Craft said. "You don't always know who's in ear shot and may be listening. You may be providing that information unwittingly to individuals who may find it useful."

Although there are always present dangers outside the workspace, Craft suggests that one should be aware while at work for potential security breaches.

"Be cognizant of those you work with and what their work habits are," Craft said. "Sometimes, folks will step out of those habits, they'll work extra on the weekends, offer to help other people with assignments they are not assigned to or have access to, under the pretext of just helping their coworker. It would warrant looking a little closer at that individual to discern their change in behavior. Perhaps it is something completely natural, like a divorce, and they just have more free time. Or it could be something more nefarious."

Fort Hood Recycle Center, in conjunction with the Directorate of Plans, Training, Mobilization and Security, is conducting a "Shred it; Don't Share It" campaign throughout October to encourage the Fort Hood community to shred important documents before throwing them away.

"Every Wednesday in the month of October from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., we encourage people to come out and shred stuff at the installation Recycle Center," Witherspoon said. "We are giving prizes away to people who bring stuff to shred."
