FORT RUCKER, Ala. (October 6, 2011) -- Fort Rucker Directorate of Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation will provide arts and entertainment of all kinds at the Fort Rucker Arts Festival Oct. 15 at the festival fields from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The Arts Festival will be a day of events for all ages, many of which highlight the talents of members of the Fort Rucker community including artists, actors and musicians, said Brian Jackson, DFMWR delivery system manager.

"We have over 20 vendors for our first festival. There will be a mixture of vendors selling jewelry, photographs, clothes, accessories, furniture and more. The uniqueness and creativity of this year's vendors have exceeded our expectations. This event is a great opportunity for [makers of] handmade arts and crafts to showcase their skills and sell their merchandise," he said.

Finalists from the Rockin' Ruckers talent show will perform, and there will also be a theatrical production entitled "Action News: Now with 10% more action!" from noon to 1 p.m. by the Above the Best Theater Company.

"We're excited for our talent show participants to get a chance to perform in front of a large audience, as well as our theater group to perform a live play," said Jackson.

In addition to the many performances and vendors, Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers will host its annual car show to help raise awareness for Fort Rucker organizations promoting domestic violence prevention, child abuse prevention, suicide prevention, Exceptional Family Member Program awareness, as well as Hearts Apart and Survivor Outreach Services.

"BOSS strives to improve the quality of life for Soldiers and their Families whenever an opportunity arises," said Jackson.

Previous car shows have averaged around 40 entries, a number that BOSS expects to exceed this year. The car show begins at 10:30 a.m. and runs throughout the day, with awards given to the best cars in the show at 3:30 p.m.

"The BOSS Car Show has proven to be a fun event and our single Soldiers are eager to see all of the entries. We plan to put on another good show for the Fort Rucker community," said Cpl. Brad Nolte, BOSS President.

Those wanting to register a car for the BOSS car show should call 379-4594.

DFMWR will also host a Student Arts Contest at the Arts Festival. Students in kindergarten through 12th grade can sign up at the Center Library on post by Wednesday to have their work displayed at the festival. According to Jackson, works can be any medium, on a color paper no bigger than 10 x 12, and can be a drawings, paintings or collages. Winners will receive ribbons and prizes at an awards ceremony at 3 p.m.

Other activities provided to festival goers will include face painting, inflatables, pony rides and the chance to take a picture in a helicopter. There will also be an all-ages video game tournament from noon until 3:30 p.m. Winners will receive trophies and awards.
