The 1st Infantry Division's commitment to the community is shown in many ways, one of which is the Adopt-a-School program. This program allows the various battalions and brigades of 1ID to interact with schools within the local community.

Each year local schools and 1ID units sign covenants of support to show their commitment to each other. These events are an opportunity for students to see and interact with 1ID Soldiers.

The 601st Aviation Support Battalion signed an Adopt-a-School covenant with Kansas Wesleyan University on Sept 18 during the school's football game against Sterling College at the Salina Central Football Field.

Rachel Hinde, Director of Communications and Military Affairs for the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce, spoke about the relationship between the Salina Area and 1ID.

"The covenant is designed to foster and sustain effect state and community partnerships with the Army in an effort to improve the quality of life for Soldiers and their Families," said Hinde.

In addition to signing a covenant with the University, CAB leadership also signed Adopt-a-School covenants with St. Johns Military School, Stewart Elementary School, Schilling Elementary School, and Sunset Elementary School.

Lt. Col. Allan Lanceta, Commander of the 601st ASB, as well as various Commanders and 1st Sergeants from Companies within the 601st, attended the ceremony to sign covenants with the schools.

"We're looking forward to partnering with, not only the Salina school districts, but also with Kansas Wesleyan University," said Lanceta.

Students from the schools involved in the covenant signings attended the event to represent their schools and their classmates and show support for the CAB.

"We are proud to implement this program into our community," said Hinde.

The Adopt-a-School program allows Soldiers to be part of the community by providing opportunities for Soldiers to contribute to the intellectual, physical, and emotional development of students through volunteer efforts.
