ADELPHI, MD -- When Hurricane Irene passed through the National Capital Region Aug. 27-28 as a tropical storm, millions of residents in Virginia, the District of Columbia and Maryland were without power for hours or days afterward.

Power was lost at the Adelphi Laboratory Center for several hours, but restored in time for normal operations on Monday. Only minor damage was incurred at ALC, including some of the trees in front of ALC's main building, the Harry Diamond Building.

At the Blossom Point Research Facility on the Potomac River in southern Maryland, managed by ALC, some trees in wooded areas were lost, as were a few shingles from three buildings.

ALC leadership monitored the storm well in advance and kept the workforce posted on the garrison's new Facebook page. They were told when power was out for several hours Sunday, and later in the day that power was restored and the installation would operate normally on Monday.
