Summer heats up with Hot Cars and Bikes
August 31, 2011
Sunny Washington weather shown over hot cars, motorcycles and bands, as servicemembers and families took in the sights and sounds of the Hot Summer Night Car and Motorcycle Show on McChord Airbase, Aug. 27.
The event has been held since 2000 and included 19 motorcycles and 35 show cars from military members stationed on or near Joint Base Lewis-McChord footprint.
"This year was bigger and better than it has been over the last few years. There were a couple of other car shows going on in the area at the same time so that took our numbers down a little," said Colin Brooks, McChord Airfield community activities director. "But next year we will plan it out better and it will be a really great show next year."
Besides seeing great cars and motorcycles and hearing good music, the event was an opportunity for families to enjoy a summer evening together.
"This is a great event for all ages. Retirees and kids love to see cars and motorcycles. This hits all the age groups, not just the 18 or 19-year old," said Brooks. "The whole family can come out and enjoy the bands, cars and good food to eat. It is a great family time."
For those who entered their rides into the event, the evening made for an opportunity to show off but also to meet up with others with similar tastes in hobbies.
"Believe it or not, I don't do this for the awards; I built this car for my daughter who passed away. It's not about the trophies. It's about the looks you get, and when someone stops and says 'nice job'. It is something I like to do with my son," said Verlin Garrett, Army Retiree and owner of a 1973 Caprice Convertible. "It took us 18 months to put this car together and its something to give us some bonding time together."
