Major General Mary A. Legere is a graduate of the University of New Hampshire and was commissioned through ROTC as a Second Lieutenant in May 1982.

General Legere's military education includes the Military Intelligence Officer Basic and Advanced Courses, and Masters Degrees from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, MMAS Military Science, and the U.S. Army War College, MSST Strategy.

General Legere's first assignment was as a Platoon Leader with the 511th Military Intelligence Battalion. She later became Plans and Stationing Officer for the 207th Military Intelligence Group, VII Corps, U.S. Army Europe and Seventh Army Germany. In 1985, she was S-4 for the 511th Military Intelligence Battalion. In November 1986, she became the Signal Intelligence/Electronic Warfare/Readiness Officer for the 532d Military Intelligence Battalion, 501st Military Intelligence Brigade, and in November 1987, she became the Commander, A Company, 532d Military Intelligence Battalion. In January 1989, she was assigned as Chief, All Source Production Section, 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized), Fort Carson, Colorado, and later became S-2, 4th Aviation Brigade, 4th Infantry Division (Mechanized). In 1991, she was assigned as a Professional Development Officer, and later Lieutenant Assignments Officer, Military Intelligence Branch, U.S. Army Personnel Command, Alexandria, Virginia. In 1994, she was assigned as the S-3, 524th Military Intelligence Battalion, and later S-3, 501st Military Intelligence Brigade, Eighth U.S. Army, Korea. In 1996, she became the Assistant Executive Officer to the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, Washington, D.C. In August 1997, she was assigned as the Deputy Director, Executive Communications and Control, Office of the Chief of Staff, Army, Washington, DC. In 1998, she became Deputy G-2, III Corps, Fort Hood, Texas, and in 1999, assumed command of the 312th Military Intelligence Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Hood, Texas, with service in OPERATION JOINT FORGE, Bosnia-Herzegovina. In 2002, she was assigned as Commander, 501st Military Intelligence Brigade, Eighth U.S. Army, Korea. In June 2004, she was selected for a joint assignment as Chief, Commander's Initiative Group, United Nations Command/Combined Forces Command/U.S. Forces Korea, Korea, and in July 2005, as Special Assistant to the Commander, United Nations Command/Combined Forces Command/U.S. Forces Korea, Korea. In 2006, she received her third joint assignment as Assistant Chief of Staff, J-2, U.S. Forces Korea, Deputy C-2, Combined Forces Command. In April 2008, she was assigned as Assistant Deputy Chief of Staff for Intelligence, C-2, Multi-National Force-Iraq, and in September 2008, as the Deputy Chief of Staff, Intelligence, Multi-National Force-Iraq, OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM, Iraq. General Legere assumed command of U.S. Army Intelligence and Security Command on October 16, 2009.

General Legere's awards and decorations include the Defense Superior Service Medal (One Oak Leaf Cluster), Legion of Merit (One Oak Leaf Cluster), Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (Five Oak Leaf Clusters), Army Commendation Medal (Two Oak Leaf Clusters), Joint Service Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal (Two Oak Leaf Clusters), Parachutist Badge, and the Army Staff Identification Badge.
