BRAINERD, Minn., Aug. 22, 2011 -- Drag racing fans have now narrowed the NHRA's Greatest Moments from 60 to 20 and U.S. Army Racing holds two spots on the coveted list which was announced Monday following the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals here at Brainerd International Raceway.
Former U.S. Army Funny Car driver, Don "The Snake" Prudhomme, and current U.S. Army Top Fuel pilot, Tony "The Sarge" Schumacher both made the cut following the initial wave of fan voting which began March 9 and concluded Aug. 17.
Prudhomme's near-perfect 1976 season clearly drew plenty of attention. After winning six of eight national events in 1975, the California legend returned for an encore the very next year by winning seven of eight races. He was runner up at the only race he didn't win - the U.S. Nationals.
As for Schumacher, his eye-opening performance at the 2006 season finale - commonly known as "The Run" - collected a number of votes. The Chicago-area resident had to set a national elapsed time record (4.428-seconds) in the final round to claim the race win and clinch his third consecutive world championship.
Fan voting to slice the list to the Top 10 Moments has already commenced via NHRA's Facebook page and will continue through the conclusion of the Mac Tools U.S. Nationals on Sept. 5, at which point the Top 10 will be unveiled.
The Greatest Moment in NHRA history will be revealed during the Auto Club NHRA Finals in Pomona, Calif., on Nov. 13.
