ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - "I hope that you see this exhibit as a visual, tangible promise that their incredible sacrifice will never be forgotten. It is our duty to keep their spirits alive," said Brig. Gen. Brian Layer at the Aug. 15 opening of the "Remembering Our Fallen" photo display

Layer, Army Sustainment Command deputy commanding general for sustainment, spoke at the Davenport, Iowa, Public Library's opening ceremony to honor Fallen Soldiers. Special guests included ASC Command Sgt. Major Stephen D. Blake, Quad Cities-area Gold Star families, Davenport Mayor Bill Gluba, Central High School's Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps color guard and the Patriot Guard.

LaWanda Roudebush, Davenport Public Library director, said the photo display was created to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars.

"The touring display is a legacy for the men and women to be remembered and have their names spoken," she said. "The exhibit includes favorite photos selected by the Families."

The touring photo display of Iowa's Fallen Soldiers, who died from wounds suffered in a war zone since Sept. 11, 2001, is on exhibit at the Davenport Main Street Library Aug. 15-23.

Layer invited the audience to think about those whose service and sacrifice didn't end with the loss of their loved one.

"Live each day like it's our last and demonstrate our gratitude for our national blessings," Layer concluded.
