FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas " Capitalizing on a pool of trained space shuttle employees, Mission and Installation Contracting Command recruiters took part in a job fair Aug. 2 in Cape Canaveral, Fla.

“Not surprising, many of the recruits were engineers and technical parts specialists,” said Steven Stacy, a human resource specialist at the MICC.

Stacy joined Army Contracting Command recruiters in manning a job fair booth where they spoke with hundreds of job seekers about employment opportunities and benefits.

The recruiting team will refer applicable resumes to the Army Materiel Command for hiring consideration at the command’s depots and proving grounds.

The job fair was sponsored by NASA, Brevard Workforce and the state of Florida. It included more than 70 employers representing private industry and federal agencies who met with many of the 1,500 employees being laid off by United Space Alliance, a primary contractor for the Kennedy Space Center.

Although MICC recruiters were primarily seeking individuals to fill contracting and quality assurance specialist positions, they also sought candidates for career fields that support the MICC’s primary mission.

According to Maria Allen, MICC Civilian Personnel Division deputy chief, those formerly employed at Cape Canaveral present a valuable skill set for government employment.

“Most candidates worked for government contractors and many of these had previously been on active duty,” Allen said. “Their experience with government organization, personnel and mission accomplishment is valuable.”

Stacy said recruiters attend job fairs one to two times a month, depending on the opportunities available. Interested individuals can meet with MICC recruiters at the upcoming Military Stars job fair in Dallas later this month and the Hiring Heroes job fair at Fort Sam Houston in September.

The MICC is responsible for planning, integrating, awarding and administering contracts in support of Army commands, direct reporting units, U.S. Army North and other organizations to provide the best value for the mission, Soldiers and their families.
