Maj. Gen. Michael S. Linnington, commanding general of the Joint Force Headquarters - National Capital Region and the U.S. Army Military District of Washington hosted his first commander’s conference since he assumed command at JFHQ-NCR/MDW June 3, 2011. Issues discussed at the conference spanned the mission of the JFHQ-NCR and included security and ceremonial plans for events within the NCR.

Linnington stressed that while all of the briefs presented contain pertinent information, the interaction between participants at the conference is important as well, stating the personal cross-talk between senior leaders within the NCR is of paramount importance during an emergency.

Capital Shield 2012, scheduled for the middle of October this year, was discussed in detail. Capital Shield 2012 is an interagency emergency management exercise conducted at Fort McNair, D.C. and other locations in Virginia. It is an opportunity to highlight the JFHQ-NCR's unique capabilities and how it works jointly with its partners as a collaborative team in a contingency environment, across a full spectrum of assigned missions.

JFHQ-NCR plans, coordinates, maintains situational awareness, and as directed, employs forces for homeland defense and defense support to civil authorities in the National Capital Region Joint Operations Area to safeguard the Nation’s capital.

During incidents of national significance, JFHQ-NCR transitions to Joint Task Force National Capital Region (JTFNCR). JTF-NCR brings appropriate levels of military support to bear in the National Capital Region when authorized by proper authorities or as immediately required to save lives, prevent human suffering or mitigate great property damage. Such support, primarily land-based, will be under the command and control of the joint force commander.
