EEO to host workshops for federal employees

By Thomas MorrisonAugust 3, 2011

FORT BENNING, Ga. - The staff of the Equal Employment Opportunity Office wants to educate federal civilian employees, and remove barriers that may be keeping them from moving up the ladder of success. One way EEO wants to help is with its 2011 Federal Employees’ Workshops, scheduled for Aug. 10-11.

“One of these barriers is lack of information,” EEO specialist Winnie Torain said. “We get caught up in our jobs and we forget about ourselves and our careers.”

Torain helped organize this year’s workshops and said the theme “Civilian Workforce Transformation” was chosen to highlight some of the recent changes within the Army system “that employees might not be aware of.”

The workshops will focus on how to use a new system, USA Staffing, to apply for federal jobs through the Internet, Torain said.

“Applicants can store resumes in the system, tweak them, and use them for multiple job openings,” she said.

The system can be used by both current federal employees and job seekers not currently employed by the government.

The workshops will highlight different unions federal employees can join based on their current job position. It will also highlight some laws and rules at Fort Benning that EEO officials said are beneficial to understand.

“In reality, these workshops are for people to understand the laws, to empower them in the workplace and help them manage their careers,” Torain said. “If they are not aware, they could remain with their current job for the rest of their lives. We want them to be the best they can be.”

The first day of the workshops will be at Harmony Church in the 197th Infantry Brigade headquarters, Building 5118 on 316th Cavalry Road. The following day will be on Main Post in the Army Community Service Auditorium, Building 7 on Baltzell Avenue.
